Medical privacy and the public's right to vote: What presidential candidates should disclose.Robert Streiffer, Alan P. Rubel & Julie R. Fagan - 2006 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 31 (4):417 – 439.
We argue that while presidential candidates have the right to medical privacy, the public nature and importance of the presidency generates a moral requirement that candidates waive those rights in certain circumstances. Specifically, candidates are required to disclose information about medical conditions that are likely to seriously undermine their ability to fulfill what we call the "core functions" of the office of the presidency. This requirement exists because (1) people have the right to be governed only with their consent, (2) (...)

Structural and functional properties of the evolutionarily ancient Y‐box family of nucleic acid binding proteins.Alan P. Wolffe - 1994 - Bioessays 16 (4):245-251.
The Y‐box proteins are the most evolutionarily conserved nucleic acid binding proteins yet defined in bacteria, plants and animals. The central nucleic acid binding domain of the vertebrate proteins is 43% identical to a 70‐amino‐acid‐long protein (CS7.4) from E. coli. The structure of this domain consists of an antiparallel fivestranded β‐barrel that recognizes both DNA and RNA. The diverse biological roles of these Y‐box proteins range from the control of the E. coli cold‐shock stress response to the translational masking of (...)

    Rights, Indirect Utilitarianism, and Contractarianism.Alan P. Hamlin - 1989 - Economics and Philosophy 5 (2):167-188.
Economic approaches to both social evaluation and decision-making are typically Paretian or utilitarian in nature and so display commitments to both welfarism and consequentialism. The contrast between the economic approach and any rights-based social philosophy has spawned a large literature that may be divided into two branches. The first is concerned with the compatibility of rights and utilitarianism seen as independent moral forces. This branch of the literature may be characterized as an example of the broader debate between the teleological (...)

What do linker histones do in chromatin?Alan P. Wolffe, Saadi Khochbin & Stefan Dimitrov - 1997 - Bioessays 19 (3):249-255.
Knockout experiments in Tetrahymena show that linker histone H1 is not essential for nuclear assembly or cell viability. These results, together with a series of biochemical and cell biological observations, challenge the existing paradigm that requires linker histones to be a key organizing component of higher‐order chromatin structure. The H1 Knockouts also reveal a much more subtle role for H1. Instead of acting as a general transcriptional repressor, H1 is found to regulate a limited number of specific genes. Surprisingly, H1 (...)

Defending and Declaring the Faith: Some Scottish Examples 1860-1920.Alan P. F. Sell - 1987 - Wipf & Stock.
Between 1860-1920 a number of distinguished Scottish theologians grappled with the problems of reconciling a biblical faith with current philosophical and theological trends. Alan Sell has selected eight of these: John Kennedy of Dingwall ; Robert Flint ; John Caird ; A. B. Bruce ; James Iverach ; James Orr ; D. W. Forrest ; and James Denney. The book is not only of historical interest; many of the issues confronted by these scholars are also of contemporary interest. Professor (...)

    Philosophical idealism and Christian belief.Alan P. F. Sell - 1996 - New York: St. Martin's Press.
This book is concerned with the religious and socio-ethical aspects in the writings of selected idealists. It addresses the question: was post-Hegelian philosophical idealism, in its friendliest guise, more a help than a hindrance to the expression of Christian convictions and the articulation of Christian doctrines?

  49. Scottish Religious Philosophy, 1850–1900.Alan P. F. Sell - 2014 - In W. J. Mander (ed.), The Oxford Handbook of British Philosophy in the Nineteenth Century. New York, NY: Oxford University Press.
In this chapter the intellectual-ecclesiastical context of religious philosophizing in Scotland in the second half of the nineteenth century is briefly sketched, and a selection of thinkers who followed in the wake of Reid’s common sense realism is introduced—Hamilton, Campbell Fraser and Flint among them. Responses to past philosophers and to then current trends in philosophy are reviewed. At a time when classical theistic arguments could no longer serve as once they had; when the ‘evidences’ of miracle and prophecy were (...)
